Padres pregame: Ramón Laureano (hip) to injured list to make room for Jase Bowen

Jase Bowen will start in left field for his major league debut at the expense of Ramón Laureano, who is hitting the 10-day injured list with right hip inflammation.

Tuesday’s first pitch is at 3:40 p.m. on Padres.TV.

Laureano’s IL stint is backdated to May 31. To make room for Bowen on the active roster, right-hander Nick Pivetta was moved to the 60-day injured list.

The 31-year-old Laureano is hitting .203/.286/.374 with seven homers but is hitting .147/.248/.266 over his last 34 games.

A year ago, Laureano hit .290/.355/.529 with 15 homers in 82 games to start the year in Baltimore and the hit .269/.323/.489 with nine homers in 50 games after the trade to San Diego.

Laureano looked like he was picking up where he left off last season by pairing four homers with a .288/.346/.534 batting line over his first 19 games this season.

The Padres were 14-5 in those games.

With Laureano on the injured list, the 25-year-old Bowen (read about his call-up here), Bowen will man left field and bat seventh, between shortstop Xander Bogaerts (.687 OPS) and second baseman Sung-Mung Song (.538 OPS).

Song is making his ninth start in the field since making his first on May 5.

With Song at first base, Fernando Tatis Jr. (.658 OPS) is in right field and leading off, followed by first baseman Gavin Sheets (.807 OPS), third baseman Manny Machado (.620 OPS), designated hitter Miguel Andujar (.733 OPS) and center fielder Jackson Merrill (.617 OPS).

Freddy Fermin (.410 OPS) will catch right-hander Randy Vásquez as he has all season.

Tuesday’s pitching matchup

Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (5-3, 3.28 ERA)

He has a 6.30 ERA over his last two starts, which includes allowed four runs on three homers in 5⅔ innings in a loss to the Phillies in his last appearance. Vásquez has a 1.46 ERA in four road starts this season. He has just one quality start in his last six starts (4.55 ERA).

Phillies RHP Aaron Nola (3-4, 5.72 ERA)

The 32-year-old faced the Padres in his last start, earning the win with two runs allowed over six innings in which he struck out five without issuing a walk. It was just Nola’s fourth quality start in 11 tries. He is allowing opposing hitters an .821 OPS.
