Garamendi, Recile lead in CA’s 8th Congressional District, initial results show

The candidate field in California’s 8th Congressional District will narrow to two candidates.

The Associated Press projected that Rep. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, and Republican Rudy Recile would advance to the November general election.

Despite having two Democratic opponents, Garamendi garnered about 53% of the vote, according to preliminary results from the California Secretary of State’s Office. As of Wednesday afternoon, Recile followed with about 32%. Democrats Nicholas Carjuzaa and Aaron Rowden received roughly 10% and 5% of the vote, respectively.

Garamendi is a Delta congressman who plans to focus on bringing jobs to the middle class, enhancing health care accessibility and investing in clean energy, according to his campaign website. He was elected to Congress in 2009 and previously served as California’s lieutenant governor.

Recile is a retired U.S. Army veteran who was stationed in Illinois, South Korea and Washington, D.C., according to his campaign website. He wants to reconsider water restrictions, support veterans and reduce government spending.
