Elk Grove residents to pay more for garbage service. Here’s what it will cost

Elk Grove residents will pay 3% more for garbage collection beginning July 1 after the City Council approved a rate increase to cover rising operating costs.

Residents with a single 32-gallon garbage cart, the city’s smallest service level, will see their monthly bills increase from $31.51 to $32.46. Rates for 64-gallon carts will rise from $36.54 to $37.64, while 96-gallon carts will increase from $46.66 to $48.06 under the city’s agreement with Allied Waste Services.

The increase adds 95 cents per month, or $11.40 per year, for households with a single 32-gallon cart. Residents with multiple or larger garbage carts will pay up to $2.30 more per month, or $27.60 more per year.

Kimberly Taylor, the city’s recycling and waste manager, said at the June 10 City Council meeting that the rate adjustment will help cover inflationary increases for labor, fuel and other operating costs.

Taylor said inflation increased the cost of services by 5.37%, but the city’s contract caps annual rate increases at 3%.

Each household may receive up to three recycling and organics carts at no additional charge. Those rates are not affected by the increase, Taylor said.

Low-income residents enrolled in the city and Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s lifeline rate assistance program receive a 20% discount on garbage services, Taylor said.
