The Athletics’ hottest hitter Zack Gelof was placed on the 10-day injured list after his right hand was punctured by a cleat, effectively ending his 24-game hitting streak during Tuesday’s loss to the San Francisco Giants, the A’s announced Thursday morning.

Gelof suffered a right hand laceration and contusion during the brutal, bottom-of-the-second-inning play that led to the A’s infielder exiting the game with blood visible on his hand, the club said earlier this week.

After Tuesday’s game, A’s manager Mark Kotsay said there was no plan to place Gelof on the IL, saying the team would handle the injury “day-to-day.” However, Kotsay said Wednesday that Gelof’s hand was still swollen and painful and that a decision would be made regarding an IL stint Thursday.

“He made some improvement, but not a ton,” Kotsay said, according to MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos.

An X-ray taken after Tuesday’s game showed no fractures or breaks, and Kotsay said at the time the injury wouldn’t require stitches.

‘Zack is a dynamic player’

During his streak, Gelof became a major part of the A’s lineup, hitting leadoff in his four most recent starts. In his 24-game streak, Gelof held a .977 on-base plus slugging percentage with 12 extra-base hits, bouncing back from a rough start to the season.

The streak would’ve been tied for the longest in franchise history during the Expansion Era if it was extended to 25 games Tuesday, and was already the longest single-season streak in the MLB over the last two seasons and sixth-longest in club history.

“Zack is a dynamic player,” Kotsay said last week. “We’re really happy to see him having the success he’s having, and being able to contribute on a day-to-day.”

Overall this season, the 26-year-old is slashing .282/.336/.498 with 12 home runs and 10 doubles in just over 200 at bats across 62 games. It’s a return to form for Gelof, after the infielder struggled mightily in both 2024 and 2025.

After leading MLB in strikeouts in 2024, Gelof has especially improved his strikeout rate this season, striking out 55 times — still above the league average, but not by as much as previous seasons.

Williams recalled as Wilson’s status uncertain

With the loss of Gelof, A’s utility infielder Alika Williams was recalled from Triple-A after being sent down Monday. Williams will start at shortstop and hit ninth for the A’s during their series finale against the Giants on Thursday afternoon.

In 45 at-bats across 23 games with the A’s this season, Williams is slashing .289/.319/.467 with six extra-base hits.

A’s All-Star shortstop Jacob Wilson was out of the starting lineup Thursday after he was pulled late in Wednesday’s game due to left shoulder soreness. Wilson appeared to hurt his shoulder while trying unsuccessfully to avoid a tag by Giants catcher Eric Haase during Wednesday’s 2-1 loss.

Kotsay said postgame that Wilson could not swing a bat properly due to the injury, but did not have an update on his status.
