The Vikings have finally announced the results of the team’s contentious quarterback competition, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kyler Murray has been named the Week 1 starting quarterback for the 2026 season, putting an end to the much-talked-about position battle and handing the keys to the Vikings offense to the former Cardinals veteran. After an open battle to start camp got going, Murray put distance between himself and now-backup quarterback J.J. McCarthy over the past few weeks, and while there were some recent struggles that might have put into question Murray’s lead in the QB race, it ultimately didn’t matter to the Vikings brass, who felt they needed to make a decision before the Vikings’ preseason opener against the Giants this Saturday.

Murray will be the Vikings’ fourth straight different Week 1 starter
The Vikings’ announcement of Kyler Murray as the starter came amid a string of rough practices for the veteran quarterback. Murray threw two really rough interceptions in his last practice and has struggled with inconsistencies and bad accuracy and decision-making over the last week. Those inconsistencies have plagued Murray during his career, as well as his injury issues and his well-documented lack of discipline in studying game film. These issues could hurt him in terms of production on the field, but what could determine what makes or breaks his time with the Vikings will be his leadership of the team.

Can Kyler Murray truly lead the Vikings?
What gave me pause when the Vikings initially signed Kyler Murray, and what made me think that J.J. McCarthy might actually have a chance to win this QB race, was my impression that McCarthy was more in tune with the team and more of a natural leader. Kyler Murray is an incredible athlete with plenty of highlights throughout his career, but he’s never appeared to me to be a guy who has inspired and led the guys around him. He had a number of talented players around him on the Cardinals offense. Still, they never seemed to be a cohesive unit. Whether that was for a lack of leadership from him as the quarterback is unclear, but it’s not a great indicator for his ability to lead the Vikings this season. I think Murray’s success as the starting quarterback for the Vikings will depend almost entirely on whether he can be a true leader in the locker room or not. The team has plenty of talent, especially on offense, so now it’s up to him and the coaching staff to make sure they can coalesce around him as the team’s leader. If he can do that, they’ll find success; if not, we will be in for a long season.
