The Minnesota Timberwolves recently completed their roster overhaul this summer by signing former NBA champion Jonathan Kuminga to a two-year deal. A young and athletic 6’7″ forward who had a role in the Golden State Warriors’ title win in 2022, Kuminga’s search for an NBA team that could truly unlock his skills has led him to the Timberwolves, where he will team up with the dynamic backcourt of perennial All-Star Anthony Edwards and dynamic point guard LaMelo Ball.

Kuminga was recently officially introduced as a member of the T-Wolves and spoke to the media about his decision to sign with the team and his expectations for this season. He was also asked what he was most excited about playing with Ball, the sensational but oft-injured guard whom the T-Wolves acquired from the Charlotte Hornets this offseason.
While his answer was nothing to write home about, it was his declaration about Ball’s passing ability that raised a lot of eyebrows amongst hoop fans, pundits, and fellow players.
High-risk, high-reward type of player
A 6’7″ point guard who won Rookie of the Year honors in 2020, Ball has become a fan favorite due to his dazzling style of play. From threading the needle for spectacular passes to taking one-legged, long-distance 3-pointers, Ball has proven to be the type of player who can fill arenas with fans, but doesn’t necessarily impact winning.
After watching and competing against Ball for several years, Kuminga believes he can thrive sharing the court with the former. Only 23, JK is a proven rim-runner who theoretically can rack up easy points just by filling the lane and scoring off Ball’s dimes.
“I was watching him work out yesterday. I was watching him doing certain things, and just the way he passed the ball, it’s incredible,” Kuminga
“I mean, I played with so many point guards in my career, but I never played with somebody that could pass as good as LaMelo,” he continued. “So, I think I’m looking forward to it. So, and I’m excited.”

Kuminga played with Steph, Draymond and CP3
Kuminga’s sentiment about LaMelo is spot-on. After all, the 2022 All-Star has averaged 7.3 assists per game in his six-year career. But at the same time, his 2.29 assist-to-turnover ratio means he’s just as likely to throw the ball out of bounds as he is to set a teammate up for an easy bucket.

Most importantly, Kuminga spent his first five seasons playing with elite playmakers like Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and the Point God himself, Chris Paul.

While Curry’s best attribute is his shooting ability, he is an unselfish player who knows his gravity often pulls defenders and doesn’t hesitate to pass to teammates who are wide open for clean looks at the basket. The same can be said for Green, who has set himself apart from most power forwards with his ability to read the defense and react accordingly.

However, the most established dime-dropper Kuminga has played with is CP3, who time and again made hooping so easy for him with passes like this.

Kuminga could still have bitter feelings towards the Warriors for never allowing him to spread his wings during his time there. Or he could be just buttering up to LaMelo, with whom he will share the court this upcoming season. Whatever the case may be, Kuminga’s statement about Ball being the best passer he has played with will be a point of discussion for quite some time.
