For the first time in nearly a decade, CBS play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz will have a new partner in the broadcast booth.

Shortly after Tony Romo was arrested in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating while under the influence, CBS placed him on leave and promoted J.J. Watt to the No. 1 broadcast crew. He spent the 2025 season working alongside Ian Eagle.
With the 2026 season approaching very soon, Watt released a statement on his rise up the ranks.
“Haven’t said much because it’s not the circumstances you’d hope it would happen under, but I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity and look forward to working with a legendary team in Jim Nantz, Tracy Wolfson, Jim Rikhoff and the entire CBS lead crew,” Watt wrote on social media. “See you in Minnesota!”
It sure sounds like Watt’s first regular-season assignment with the No. 1 crew will be the Packers-Vikings game on Sept. 13.

Who’ll take J.J. Watt’s spot at CBS?
Since Watt is moving up to the No. 1 team for this fall, CBS is expected to move Ross Tucker up to the No. 2 crew.
Tucker, who joined CBS Sports as a game analyst in 2018, played in the NFL for seven years, suiting up for the Commanders, Cowboys, Bills, Browns and Patriots.
As for Romo, it’s being reported that he most likely called his last game for CBS. However, he has $72 million remaining on his deal.
