It’s no secret that the Miami Dolphins have arguably the worst receiving corps in the NFL.

But after signing a one-year, $1.4 million contract, Jalen Tolbert has an opportunity to thrive in the team’s new offense.
Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have both departed. De’Von Achane also led the Dolphins in receiving last season with 67 catches.
During his first four seasons in the league with the Dallas Cowboys, Tolbert, 27, established himself as a versatile receiver with big-play ability. Now, he will compete with Malik Washington and Tutu Atwell for the Dolphins’ No. 1 receiver role in training camp.
A crowded receiver room still awaits him
The Dolphins also have a new quarterback in Malik Willis, who signed a three-year, $67.5 million contract in March. To properly evaluate Willis, the Dolphins will need to develop weapons around him. That is good news for Tolbert, who has a chance to become Willis’ top target.
“It wasn’t more so about the role. It was more so just about the opportunity to compete, the opportunity to go out there and earn a role,” Tolbert said shortly after joining the Dolphins. “Nothing is given in this league. Nothing is given at all. We wouldn’t respect people if they gave it anyway. Like I said, you’ve got to work for it. You’ve got to earn everything that you want.”

Tolbert’s career appeared to be on the upswing following a productive 2024 season. He finished with 49 receptions for 610 yards and seven touchdowns.
However, Tolbert’s production dipped during his final season in Dallas. He recorded just 18 catches for 203 yards and one touchdown while also being inactive for four games.
It also didn’t help that the Cowboys acquired George Pickens from the Steelers, reducing Tolbert’s opportunities.
On a rebuilding Dolphins team, opportunities in the passing game shouldn’t be an issue for Tolbert. Miami is sacrificing short-term success for long-term sustainability as it cleans up its salary cap and evaluates its young talent.
