Jaylen Brown is currently in the middle of his $285 million deal, a position that comes with privileges most people couldn’t even imagine. In 2023, it was the biggest deal in NBA history when he extended his contract with the Boston Celtics.

However, it’s not all fine and dandy when you’re rich. According to the Philadelphia 76ers forward, becoming wealthy brings its own set of problems that are harder to see from the outside. Some of these complications have little to do with money itself, but with how wealth changes relationships and decisions.
A balancing act
JB wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but he wasn’t broke either. His mom, Mechalle, was a well-educated woman, holding a doctorate degree from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Michigan State University.
His mother’s pedigree gave Jaylen and his brother, Quention, a strong academic foundation. That explains why the 2024 NBA Finals MVP was never afraid of taking graduate classes at UC Berkeley or wasn’t fazed when Harvard asked him to take part in a speaker series with the Graduate School of Education.
Eventually, as he became an NBA All-Star, he continued to build his name and capitalize on it. Besides his rookie-scale deal and the 2019 and 2023 contract extensions, Brown also secured endorsements with Beats by Dr. Dre, Nutrafol, and Pepsi. That made his current net worth an estimated $80 million, with more to come.
That kind of wealth can change one’s life in obvious ways. But Brown also recognizes that the more money you have, the more there is to manage. Sometimes, that becomes an incessant balancing act that messes with what one considers normal.
“I think money definitely can help you bring that peace of mind that you’re looking for,” Brown
“But at the same time, it also can add stressors and things as well that people who don’t have money, don’t also understand at the same time. It’s a balance, but don’t think it’s going to be one without the other.”
“People think people who got money and everything is clear as day. It’s not always the case. You still would take that option of being the person to have it, but just know that it also comes with some detriments,” the five-time All-Star added.
Some of the “detriments” JB was talking about are the shift in family dynamics and mental health issues, among others. While he acknowledges that most people would choose to be wealthy, they must also be aware of the consequences.

Wealth can affect relationships on all levels. Conversations may become less candid, making constructive criticism less common. Friends may become less willing to disagree with you, even when what you need is an honest opinion.
“The more money you accumulate, the more stressors and problems… could affect you,” he stated.
JB’s endeavors
It’s refreshing for Brown to talk about wealth and the complications it may bring in a very honest way.
That said, JB has already shown that he figured that part out. One of his more notable brainchildren is the Black XChange, a nonprofit initiative he launched to expand wealth-building opportunities for the Black community through an online professional network where entrepreneurs connect and share their experiences.
The platform creates opportunities for Black artists and entrepreneurs while enabling greater financial growth.
From the looks of it, Brown is set to make his wealth more than just his personal comfort. If money can change the way people see you, JB appears interested in using his wealth to change the future of others.
