“That’s just the business” – Dennis Schroder gets real about joining his 12th NBA team

If you’ve been traded as often as Dennis Schroder has, you probably learn to find something to like about every new destination. The German point guard has done exactly that with his latest move.

In an interview with the “Braunschweiger Zeitung” this week, Schroder made it clear. Moving from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Charlotte Hornets? It should help him thrive.

“I think this is the better situation for me from a basketball standpoint,” he said, per Sky Sports.

Inching toward NBA’s journeyman record

Schroder was on the sidelines of a preseason exhibition for Basketball Löwen Braunschweig recently. That’s the Bundesliga club he partly owns. He admitted the deal had been in motion for weeks.

“I knew about it a month ago already,” he said.

Whether that early knowledge was a good thing or a bad thing? That is unclear. What is clear, though, is that the Hornets will be his 12th NBA franchise. It will also be his 10th in the past five years alone.

That puts Schroder just one team behind Ish Smith’s NBA record of 13. Naturally, the question is whether it’s a record he wants to chase. It didn’t sound like it. Asked about closing in on the mark, The Menace shrugged it off, stating, “That’s just the business.”

Schroder’s fit in Charlotte

The business side is one thing. The basketball side is another. From that standpoint, the 2023 FIBA World Cup MVP believes this move will be good for him.

It tracks.

With the Cavs, Schroder found himself behind James Harden and Donovan Mitchell. Both are ball-dominant guards.

“When you’ve got two legends at your position who bring the ball up and play a lot of isolation, that gets difficult,” he explained.

Schroder added that finding another way to be effective “was an extremely difficult role.”

Still, he isn’t bitter about the season. Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference Finals, the closest he has ever come to reaching the promised land. The 32-year-old called that simply “cool.”

Charlotte now offers what Cleveland couldn’t really give him.

Coby White and rookie Christian Anderson Jr. are his main competition at the point guard spot. That said, Schroder could take on a sixth-man role. However, if White becomes the go-to bench scoring option, a role he can handle extremely well, the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket MVP could even start. It’s something The Menace hasn’t done in years, really.

If that happens, the familiarity around him could help, too.

Schroder already knows two guys from his time with the Atlanta Hawks: Hornets president Jeff Peterson and head coach Charles Lee.

He’ll also have two countrymen around him. Anderson Jr. and Hannes Steinbach. Both were drafted by Charlotte this year.

Schroder’s seen just about every roster situation the league can throw at a guy. One thing he never had early on was another German veteran in the locker room. Would’ve helped, the 2013 lottery pick admitted.

As for his excitement about joining the Hornets?

There isn’t much time to dwell on it anyway.

The Menace is already back with the German national team in Hamburg this week. The team is preparing for the Supercup and upcoming World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Poland.
