Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers dropped to a stunning 0-5 on the season with Sunday’s loss.

The Chargers, who entered the 2026 season with playoff expectations, now appear to be in play for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
“I don’t know what that message is,” Harbaugh said postgame. “It’s just in the players to just fight their hearts out, to play, give it everything they have. That’s the only way. That’s the best way.”
Harbaugh is taking the blame, though, saying that he made several mistakes on Sunday. Herbert, meanwhile, is owning up to his poor play, too.
“We gotta do whatever we can to win football games and make plays and do what we can to score points, and we haven’t been doing that,” Herbert told reporters. “We gotta do that better.”
How good is Herbert, really?
It’s a question that many have debated for several years now. Some NFL analysts have placed Herbert into the top five of their quarterback rankings in recent years. Others, meanwhile, feel that he’s overrated.

“Justin Herbert still hasn’t won a playoff game, which is getting harder to defend after six seasons. I can point to everything he did well during the regular season, which was enough to garner him a first-place MVP vote, but none of that will really count in the minds of his detractors. What Herbert did do was drag a Chargers offense that was ravaged by injuries (and uncreative play calling) to the playoffs while playing with a broken hand that required midseason surgery. And he did it while taking 54 sacks and facing the league’s highest rate of pressure behind an offensive line that shuffled through nearly three dozen lineup combinations,” The Ringer’s Steven Ruiz wrote in 2025, ranking Herbert fourth in the league.
But now, some NFL reporters are arguing that Herbert was “never good.”
How good is Herbert, really?
Longtime NFL reporter Charean Williams says that Herbert has never been that good.
“Justin Herbert has never been good. He’s one of a handful of players who have an undeserved reputation for looking the part but not playing the part,” she wrote on X.
Other fans, of course, disagree.
“Seems pretty crazy to say that,” one fan wrote on X.
“This is just simply not true like not even close to true to have the following you have to say something this ignorant is saddening,” one fan added.
“Horrible take. If you swapped the word elite for good this makes sense. Reasonable thoughtful take effects your credibility. Never been good?” one fan added.
