Back on Nov. 1, 2025, Herbstreit went on a rant about Oklahoma kicker Tate Sandell’s shorts as he was getting ready to attempt a field goal against Tennessee. He found it so egregious that he wanted Sandell to be penalized.

“That should be a penalty,” Herbstreit said. “Just dressing like that should be a penalty. What the hell is it? Wearing shorts out there.”

After Sandell made his 51-yard field goal attempt, ESPN’s Chris Fowler said, “Short shorts, but not short on distance.”

Herbstreit then added, “Got his Daisy Dukes on and puts it right down the middle.”

During an appearance on “Bussin’ With The Boys,” Herbstreit made it clear that he hasn’t changed his stance on Sandell’s shorts.

“This dude had like a jockstrap on. It was embarrassing,” Herbstreit said. “That’s ridiculous. That’s an embarrassment to the sport. I can’t stand that.”

It’s nothing personal.

Even though Herbstreit was highly critical of Sandell’s shorts, he wants fans to know that he has nothing against the senior kicker.

“He’s a badass,” Herbstreit said. “And he and I had some fun with it. But you can’t wear pants like that.”

Sandell was excellent for the Sooners in 2025, making 24 of 27 field goal attempts. He was outstanding from 50 yards or more, making all but one of his nine attempts from long range.

We’ll see if Sandell, who was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Year in 2025, picks up where he left off this fall.
