While LeBron James is still making his decision about where he wants to play next year, don’t be surprised if he ultimately winds up back where it all started, with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After eight strong seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, James is a free agent at the age of 41, and he has been connected to several contenders, including the Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Cavaliers.
Could he return to his hometown team? There’s a very good chance that he does, and some analysts even believe that the Cavaliers are the favorite to land the NBA’s hottest free agent this summer as he heads into his 24th and presumably final NBA season.
History of LeBron James in Cleveland
The Akron, Ohio, native was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. He spent the first seven years of his NBA career in Cleveland, winning Rookie of the Year, two NBA MVP awards, and helping the Cavaliers make it to the 2007 NBA Finals.
But in the summer of 2010, James made “The Decision,” leaving Cleveland for the Miami Heat, where he spent four seasons, reaching the NBA Finals in all four years and winning two more NBA Championships and two more NBA MVPs.

In 2014, James decided to return to Cleveland for a second time, and once again, he had a ton of success with his hometown team, making it to four straight finals against the mighty Warriors and winning his third NBA Championship in 2016 as the Cavaliers became the only team in NBA Finals history to come back from being down 3-1 in a series to win it.
But after achieving more success in Cleveland, James once again took his talents elsewhere, this time going to the Lakers, where he spent the past eight seasons, including winning his fourth NBA Championship in 2020, during the COVID-19-shortened season.
However, after becoming a free agent once again heading into his age-42 season, James is looking for a new home as he leaves Los Angeles.
There’s a good chance that he returns for a third and final time to where it all started in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers Need LeBron James
The Cavaliers have been one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference for the past several years, but they have yet to truly break through and make it to the NBA Finals, giving the team a chance to win another NBA Championship, and their first since James left in 2018.
Despite turning 42 on December 30, 2026, James is still a difference-maker in this league, and he could ultimately be the final piece the Cavaliers need to capture the NBA Championship.
If James returns to Cleveland, he would team up with Cavaliers All-NBA shooting guard Donovan Mitchell, power forward Evan Mobley, center Jarrett Allen, and point guard James Harden to form one of the most fearsome starting lineups in the entire NBA.
That would be a hell of a lineup, and it would likely make the Cavaliers the favorite to win the Eastern Conference next season, even over other top contenders like the Heat, New York Knicks, and Boston Celtics.
James would have to take a veteran’s minimum salary to join Cleveland since they are so deep into the luxury tax, but the GOAT has made it clear that money isn’t what he’s after. He wants to win a fifth NBA Championship and have a hand with every finger and thumb having a ring on them.
That could very well be in Cleveland, where James would have an excellent chance to win it all as the Cavaliers have a good shot to win the Eastern Conference, which is the weaker of the NBA’s two conferences, and make it to the finals.
Plus, it would be a truly incredible story, with James returning to where it all started and winning one more ring before sailing off into the sunset for good.
The story writes itself, so don’t be surprised if James ends up back in Cleveland.
