The man shot and killed by law enforcement officers following a roughly 40-minute pursuit on Highway 50 was identified as a 61-year-old Carmichael resident, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

Joseph Alexander Vanzan died after officers from the California Highway Patrol, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and Citrus Heights Police Department opened fire early Tuesday just west of Hazel Avenue.
Authorities said Vanzan pointed a weapon at officers after the pursuit ended. No officers were injured.
The incident began about 11:20 p.m. Monday when CHP officers attempted to stop the driver of a Volvo SUV for driving without headlights near Folsom and Sunrise boulevards. The driver did not stop and led officers on a pursuit along Highway 50 and surface streets in the Rancho Cordova and Gold River area.
Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies and Citrus Heights police joined the pursuit. Deputies deployed spike strips, disabling the SUV on the freeway, authorities said.

Authorities said Vanzan pointed a weapon at officers before at least one CHP officer, a sheriff’s deputy and a Citrus Heights officer opened fire. He was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center where he died.
The CHP’s Valley Division, which was leading the investigation into the shooting, has not issued an update on the investigation since Tuesday morning.
The Sheriff’s Office previously said its Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division would conduct a parallel investigation, while the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office would independently review the shooting.
