After serving Sacramento for almost two decades, a favorite Mexican restaurant is closing in midtown’s Lavender Heights district.

Azul Mexican Food & Tequila Bar announced on Instagram that it will close permanently after Saturday, Sept. 26. The restaurant has served modern, contemporary Mexican food at 1050 20th St. since 2007.
Azul is owned and run by Carlos and Jose Ulloa The brothers did not respond to a request for comment from The Sacramento Bee, but told The Sacramento Business Journal the closure was prompted by business slowing over the years and “high food costs.”
In the online post the brothers noted the decision to close had been difficult, “We’ve had the privilege of welcoming you, celebrating special moments with you, sharing our food and traditions, and creating memories that we will carry with us forever.”

The announcement included a note of appreciation to their customers.
“Thank you to every person who has ever sat at our table, celebrated a birthday, enjoyed a special dinner, shared a meal with friends, or simply stopped by,” the Ulloas wrote. “We leave with hearts full of gratitude. Thank you for being part of our journey for these 19 years.”
Azul Mexican Food & Tequila Bar is open until 9 p.m. Wednesday and will open at 11 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. the remainder of the week.
