SAN JOSE — Archbishop Mitty quarterback Kai Imahara, a recent transfer from Wilcox, has suffered a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament that will sideline the senior for the entire season.

Imahara announced the diagnosis Tuesday on X, three days before Mitty’s season opener against Acalanes at Foothill College.
“This set back is only going to help me for my future,” Imahara wrote. “I’m still staying in the game with learning all I can from Coach Sullivan, and the rest of the coaching staff.”
Imahara added that he “will be back for more” and won’t “be stoppable.”

Mitty coach Danny Sullivan commended Imahara’s maturity in the aftermath of the injury and is doing what he can to keep the quarterback involved.
“I know he wants to keep playing, if he has the opportunity,” Sullivan said, referring to college. “So we’re letting him take a dive into how we game plan, how we do things on game day so he sees it from our perspective to help him with a further understanding of what’s going to happen and what takes place on a daily basis.”
Imahara, an all-league player at Wilcox, suffered the injury in a non-contact play at practice about two weeks ago, Sullivan said.

Even if he had stayed healthy, Imahara wasn’t going to be eligible to play until early October because of section transfer rules.
Senior Tyler Bennett and sophomore Drake Coleman will play quarterback for Mitty on Friday.
“Both played really well in our scrimmage against Los Gatos, so that should give them confidence going into the first game,” Sullivan said. “I told them the common goal is whatever it takes to get us on the right side of the scoreboard is what we’re going to do. As long as we’re on the same page supporting each other, it’s going to keep our quarterback position strong.”
Mitty is coming off a 6-5 season and 22nd in the Bay Area News Group’s preseason rankings.
