NBA 2K27 Gameplay Update: Shooting, Dunks, Steals and Game Speed Changes

NBA 2K27 just received one of its most important gameplay tuning updates since launch.

Visual Concepts announced changes to shooting, standing dunks, steals, ball security and overall game speed on Sept. 17.

Unlike a normal title update, there is no download required. The adjustments are applied automatically, and 2K says players simply need to return to the Main Menu to ensure they’re playing with the latest gameplay settings.

That’s especially notable because the recent Patch 1.5 explicitly contained no gameplay changes. This is a separate tuning update.

Athlon’s NBA 2K27 review praised the on-court game and redesigned defense, while the earlier NBA 2K27 gameplay breakdown detailed the game’s dynamic Dunk Meter and defensive changes.

Shooting Defense Is Stronger

2K says defensive contests have been strengthened.

That means well-contested and low-percentage shots should now convert less often, while wide-open attempts have received a slight boost.

The intention is straightforward: reward players for generating genuinely open looks while making strong defensive positioning matter more.

For competitive players, this could be one of the most consequential changes in the update because even small alterations to contest effectiveness can significantly change optimal shot selection.

Standing Dunks Got a Boost

Big men also received help.

Standing dunks are now more likely to succeed, particularly when the offensive player is attacking an average or below-average interior defender.

The Rise Up badge also received an upgrade. 2K says the benefit is now more meaningful at Gold tier and above.

That should make interior scoring builds with high standing-dunk ratings more dangerous around the rim.

Steal Ratings Should Matter More

The steal system also had a specific problem corrected.

According to 2K, lower-rated defenders — including players with depleted adrenaline — could previously get on-ball steals more consistently than elite defenders in certain situations.

The update corrects that behavior so a player’s Steal rating is properly rewarded when making contact with the ball.

In practice, elite defensive builds should now have a more noticeable advantage over players attempting the same actions with mediocre ratings.

NBA 2K27 Game Speed Has Changed

The broadest adjustment may be game speed.

Visual Concepts says it fixed an issue and has now increased and/or standardized overall game speed so it is consistent across all modes.

That wording suggests some modes may have been running at different effective speeds before the update.

Players who rotate between MyCAREER, MyTEAM, Play Now and other modes may notice a more consistent pace going forward.

Athlon’s larger NBA 2K27 feature breakdown covers the game’s extensive mode changes, while the NBA 2K HQ guide explains the companion app’s MyPLAYER-building and Crew tools.

This is not a massive downloadable patch, but it could have a bigger impact on actual games than several conventional updates.

The shooting and steal changes affect competitive balance, while increased standing-dunk effectiveness and standardized game speed could immediately alter how NBA 2K27 feels on the court.
