Stephen Curry has said he has no intention of leaving the Golden State Warriors and wants to finish his career where it started. That’s great news for the Warriors Nation and the Golden State franchise.

However, while Steph has held up his end of the partnership with the Dubs, ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins wants the Warriors’ management to do its share to reciprocate that loyalty by giving Curry the team he rightfully deserves to compete for another NBA championship.
“The Warriors don’t have the option to wait on nothing when it comes to Steph Curry. Steph Curry, and I say this with all due respect to Willie Mays and Barry Bonds and Joe Montana and Steve Young and Jerry Rice, Steph Curry is the greatest Bay Area player to ever get his feet hot. And loyalty in today’s game, you don’t see that from players. The fact that Steph Curry has been riding with them over the last three, four years, knowing that he wants to win a championship, to me, what this interview said to me is: Mike Dunleavy! You have to do your damn job,” exclaimed Perkins.

The Warriors have been a play-in team in the last three years
Curry is arguably what Perkins said. He led the Warriors to four NBA titles while winning back-to-back MVPs in 2015 and 2016, becoming the first-ever unanimous MVP in his second win. However, since winning their last ring in 2022, the Dubs have not advanced past the second round of the playoffs.
In the last three years, the Warriors have finished in a play-in position and missed the playoffs twice. This past season, Golden State finished 9th in the Western Conference with a 37-45 record, their worst mark since their injury-riddled 2020 campaign, where they went 15-50.
Making matters worse, Jimmy Butler is still recovering from an ACL injury and isn’t expected to return until at least Christmas. With the Dubs, the only team in the NBA this offseason not to add any player via trade or free agent signing, Perkins questioned what Dunleavy has been up to and asked him to do what he is supposed to do.

“Let’s be honest. I don’t wanna keep hearing about reports that ‘The Warriors are in the hunt,’ ‘The Warriors are in the mix.’ They were in the mix to get Giannis. They want to go out there and get that. Why are you not landing them? We’re talking about Steph Curry…Mike Dunleavy has to have some type of accountability to make sure that he puts the pieces together and do his damn job to surround Steph, Draymond, and Steve Kerr with a championship roster to compete,” Perkins added.

Steph vowed to be a lifer in GS
Curry is entering the final year of his contract with the Warriors and will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season. Last month, he became eligible to sign a two-year $136.7 million extension, which Golden State is expected to offer him.
However, there have been rumors that Curry might want out because he wants to compete for another NBA title. However, during an interview with CNBC’s Alex Sherman on Thursday, Steph said he does not want to go the LeBron James route.
“I’ve always stated that I want to be a lifer with Golden State,” Curry
“What we’ve built there, the fact that I get to run it back this year with Draymond and Coach Kerr. All the contract stuff is this NBA thing from year to year; it’s so crazy things change really fast. But I do know my interest and mission to stay in Golden State and be competitive is there, and the contract stuff will take care of itself.”
There is no doubt that the extension will take care of itself. But as Perk said, the Warriors also have to take care of Steph. He does not deserve to go out competing in play-in games at the end of the year. That is an utter disservice to his greatness and to what he did for the city. Mike Dunleavy, even Joe Lacob, should know that better than anybody else.
