California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Katherine Lucero to fill a vacancy on the Yolo Superior Court, his office announced Tuesday.

Lucero spent nine years as a prosecutor and more than two decades as a judge in Santa Clara County before becoming director of the Office of Youth and Community Restoration at the California Health and Human Services Agency in 2022.
The Office of Youth and Community Restoration was created to oversee California’s shift to a county-run juvenile justice system after a 2020 law moved responsibility for youth offenders from state facilities to counties. The change was intended to improve care and outcomes by keeping young people closer to their communities.

Lucero will fill the vacancy left by longtime Judge Timothy Fall, who retired in January after more than 30 years on the bench. Fall oversaw criminal and civil cases during his career and most recently served in the county’s civil court, an assignment he took on in 2023.
