Panthers Learn Extent of Brad Marchand’s Injury After Early Exit vs. Kings

The Florida Panthers received encouraging news on Brad Marchand after the veteran forward suffered a left leg injury during Tuesday’s 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that Marchand is expected to miss just a few weeks, without setting a firm return timeline for the winger.

“Marchand’s leg injury will only sideline him for ‘a few weeks,’ a person with knowledge of the matter said Thursday,” AP’s Tim Reynolds reported. “The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team has not released any details of Marchand’s injury.”

Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke hurt Marchand with 52.6 seconds remaining, hitting him in the face with his stick. Marchand twisted while approaching the net, collided with the right post, and his left leg bent awkwardly underneath him, causing the injury.

The 38-year-old remained down on the ice for several minutes before teammates Brady Tkachuk and Niko Mikkola helped him off. Marchand couldn’t put weight on the leg and was assisted back to the dressing room.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun also reported that early indications pointed to “weeks, not months” and that the injury isn’t season-ending.

Both updates will give the Panthers some relief after the initial concerns of a potentially longer absence. Marchand had only returned to action after missing Florida’s first two games while recovering from offseason surgery, with Tuesday marking his second game of the season.

More damagingly, Marchand’s injury came only five days after captain Aleksander Barkov suffered a left leg injury against the San Jose Sharks. Panthers coach Paul Maurice said earlier this week that Barkov won’t need surgery, but he’s still expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Florida returns home Saturday to face the Minnesota Wild at 6 p.m. ET.
