The Major League Baseball trade deadline is now just four days away. Soon, all the rumors and speculation will finally come to fruition as teams reshape their rosters for the stretch run.

Few teams need a shakeup to their current roster more than the Philadelphia Phillies. Since the All-Star break, Philadelphia has gone 3-9 and watched their lead in the Wild Card race disappear with several teams now breathing down their necks.
The Phillies’ biggest needs are a right-handed hitting outfielder, starting pitching, and bullpen help. With so few sellers offering those types of players, competition for the top names is expected to be fierce.
That makes finding the right trade partner even more important. One team, however, stands out above the rest: the Phillies’ biggest rival, the New York Mets.
The Mets will likely be among the biggest sellers at this year’s deadline, with at least five current players that should be moved in the next four days.
The biggest connection between the two clubs starts in the rotation. Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported Philadelphia has been sending scouts to watch Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes ahead of the trade deadline.
Outside of Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, and Jesus Luzardo, the Phillies have gotten very little consistency from the back end of their rotation. Aaron Nola has struggled to a 5.61 ERA this season, while the club still hasn’t found a reliable No. 5 starter.

Acquiring either Peralta or Holmes would be a major boost for a team that has been trending in the wrong direction. But the fit between these clubs extends beyond the rotation. The Mets also have bullpen arms and right-handed hitting outfielders who make plenty of sense for Philadelphia.
In the bullpen, the Mets could offer A.J. Minter, Brooks Raley, Huascar Brazobán, or Luke Weaver. After losing setup man Brad Keller to a torn UCL that will sideline him through the rest of this season and likely into next year, the Phillies’ bullpen has looked much thinner bridging the gap to closer Jhoan Durán. Each of the four relievers has posted an ERA under 2.70 this season and would immediately strengthen the Phillies’ bullpen.
The Mets also have two right-handed hitting outfielders who would fit Philadelphia well in Luis Robert Jr. and Tyrone Taylor. Both are strong defenders with power potential, but Taylor has become an even more intriguing trade target thanks to his recent surge. He’s in the midst of arguably the hottest stretch of his career, hitting .333 with six home runs and a 1.286 OPS over his last 20 games.

Since losing Adolis Garcia to a season-ending right latissimus dorsi tear, the Phillies have rotated Bryan De La Cruz, Gabriel Rincones Jr., and Derek Hill through the outfield. None has inspired much confidence in a lineup with World Series aspirations, especially heading into October.
For a team with World Series expectations, the Phillies still have several holes to fill before the deadline. Ironically, their biggest rival may be the team best equipped to help them do it.
