News broke Sunday that Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker Myles Garrett would undergo arthroscopic knee surgery and head to injured reserve, sidelining him for a minimum of four games. How much time the star pass rusher misses beyond that remains up in the air.

While speaking with reporters, Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed that Garrett was set to be placed on IR following Monday’s knee surgery but was unsure how long he would be out.
“I don’t really [have a timeline] yet,” McVay said. “It’s all contingent upon how do things go today. You feel good about it. But I think it’d be unfair to him or really just without having the totality of all the information, to put any sort of timeline on it. We know that he’ll be available in four weeks potentially, so we’ll just take that a day at a time.”

Garrett, 30, was limited throughout training camp due to issues with the same knee. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year saw his first game action as a Ram during Thursday’s regular season opener, playing 62 percent of the snaps. He generated a team-high five pressures but had zero tackles or sacks in their blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

McVay told reporters that the team initially thought Garrett’s knee injury would be something he could work through while remaining the same player he is capable of being. But after listening to how Garrett felt following Thursday’s game, it became evident that was not the case.
Garrett called his performance against San Francisco “the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there.” The seven-time Pro Bowler added that while he was on the field, he was a little more focused on himself and trying to stay healthy than on what the 49ers were doing. It was his first game without a tackle since Week 11 of the 2024 season and just the fourth of his career.
The Rams traded for Garrett in June, sending two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks, including a first-rounder in 2027, to the Cleveland Browns. Last season, Garrett set the NFL single-season sack record with 23.
Losing Garrett is a major blow for the Rams, who face the New York Giants, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills over the next four weeks. It is still unclear if Aaron Donald will be ready to play in Week 2 following his two-year absence, but if the 35-year-old is anywhere near the player he was in 2023, that could help fill the void in their pass rush.
