Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham returned to practice Monday as the team prepares to resume its season following the WNBA’s FIBA World Cup break. Indiana enters the final stretch at 26-14 and has already clinched a playoff berth, but the Fever still have seeding and home-court advantage to fight for with four games remaining.

The Fever have won seven of their last nine games and currently sit fifth in the WNBA, with Atlanta holding the tiebreaker for fourth place. Three of Indiana’s final four games are against playoff teams, making the remaining schedule important as the team prepares for the postseason.
After Monday’s practice, Cunningham was asked what she would want the next WNBA commissioner to prioritize. She pointed to unity across the league.
“The WNBA has always been a place for people to feel safe and comfortable. I think there’s all types of walks in this league, which I think is absolutely awesome, but I think you need someone who is going to unite everybody” (via The Athletic’s James Boyd).

Cunningham’s comments come as the WNBA prepares for a change in leadership. Cathy Engelbert announced Sept. 4 that she will retire as commissioner at the end of the year after more than seven years in the role. The league has not announced her successor.
Cunningham had already joked about taking the job herself on the Sept. 10 debut episode of her new podcast, “No Hesitation,” with Drew Hanlen. “I think I should be commissioner,” she said, before discussing changes she would make, including ensuring every team has a functional practice facility.
The Fever guard has not been shy about criticizing league leadership. In August, Cunningham said the WNBA needed a commissioner who is “bold,” “confident” and focused on what is best for the players rather than themselves, adding that the position could be open at the end of the year.
