The Texas Rangers pulled off a solid trade with division rival Los Angeles Angels ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline.

Texas is atop the AL West, just one game up on the Houston Astros, so the race to the playoffs will be intense. With that, the Rangers got ahead of their needs as Texas made a trade with the Angels to fill two areas of need.
The Rangers acquired right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth and catcher Logan O’Hoppe for 19-year-old infield prospect Angel Arredondo.
Silseth is the major get for the Rangers, as the right-hander can be an effective reliever for Texas. The 26-year-old has been stellar, as he’s 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 47 games.
The Rangers needed some help in the bullpen, and Silseth will help them now and in the future because the right-hander is under team control through the 2028 season. That means Texas will have him for two-and-a-half more seasons as a high-leverage reliever.
That’s important because the Rangers’ bullpen has a team ERA of 4.23, which is 12th-worst in the majors, and Texas has a negative run differential. If Texas can slightly upgrade the bullpen, it should lead to more wins.

Not only did Texas get Silseth, who is the key part of the trade, the Rangers also acquired O’Hoppe, who gives them some much-needed depth.
Although O’Hoppe was assigned to Triple-A, the former top prospect gives Texas some much-needed depth at catcher, as Danny Jansen and Kyle Higashioka are on the 60-day IL, and Texas will continue to roll with Elias Diaz and Austin Wynns.

If O’Hoppe can find his form with Rock Express, he can be a useful hitter and catcher down the stretch in the big league. O’Hoppe has shown in the past that he can be an impact player, so it’s a flier worth taking for Texas.
The Rangers, meanwhile, also didn’t trade much away in this deal, as Arredondo wasn’t even ranked in Texas’ top-30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline.
Rangers Have High Hopes for Silset, O’Hoppe
The Rangers trade looks like a fleecing by Texas.
Rangers manager Skip Schumaker is excited that both may give the team a boost amid its playoff push.

“Both, obviously, are really good players,” Schumaker said in Wednesday’s game. “Chase is a right-handed power arm, leverage arm. I think our pitching group is hoping to identify some things to maybe move the needle even more.
“O’Hoppe. I think this guy’s going to be really good. I think hopefully a change of scenery, with some of our guys, can get him to a place where we all think he can get to. It’s exciting. He’s still young, a controllable catcher. With some injuries we’ve had on the catching front, I think it helps our depth. I think the front office did a fantastic job of acquiring two really good players.”
Although Texas got ahead of the market, the Rangers still could use some more help in the bullpen.
And, if the Rangers really want to go bold, Texas could look to add a high-end starting pitcher to really push them over the top in the AL West. The two biggest needs were bullpen and catching depth, which Texas checked off days before the deadline.
