The Texas Rangers got a concerning explanation for Jacob deGrom’s early exit Thursday after manager Skip Schumaker revealed the veteran pitcher was dealing with groin tightness.

DeGrom was dominant through six innings against the Seattle Mariners, retiring his first 15 batters and striking out 12. But he did not return for the seventh after feeling discomfort during the outing.
Schumaker told reporters that deGrom first felt his groin tighten while covering first base in the fourth inning. The right-hander continued pitching through the issue before the Rangers decided not to push him any further.

DeGrom finished with one hit, one walk and 12 strikeouts over six scoreless innings. He left with Texas leading 3-0, but the advantage disappeared after he exited.
The Rangers’ bullpen surrendered four runs in the seventh, including a go-ahead three-run homer by Julio Rodríguez. Texas ultimately fell 4-3, turning deGrom’s excellent outing into a disappointing loss.

The groin issue is particularly worth watching given how much the Rangers have relied on deGrom this season. The 38-year-old entered Thursday with 149.1 innings across 28 starts, posting a 3.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 186 strikeouts.
DeGrom has already dealt with a bout of right triceps fatigue this season, making his latest physical issue another development for Texas to monitor. The Rangers cannot afford to lose their ace for an extended stretch with the AL West race still within reach.
For now, the biggest question is whether deGrom’s groin tightness affects his next scheduled start. The Rangers will have to determine his availability after further evaluation.
