According to Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story, he could be back on the field as soon as this weekend when the club plays host to the San Francisco Giants for a three-game set at Fenway Park.

Story, who began a rehab assignment on Sunday with the Worcester Red Sox, has been out for three months after undergoing sports hernia surgery on May 22nd. The 11-year vet started at shortstop but was removed after four innings, seeing just two at-bats and going 1-for-2 with a single and a flyout.
The 33-year-old spoke with the media in Boston during the WooSox’s scheduled off-day on Monday, revealing his next steps and discussing a timeline for his return, which he thinks could be imminent.
Story explained that the plan is for him to play in the next two Triple-A games, which will be on Tuesday and Wednesday in Syracuse. After that the team will “re-evaluate,” and an activation this weekend is “possible.”
Trevor Story says he could be active as early as Friday against the Giants. Will rehab with WooSox on Tue-Wed and re-evaluate then.

If this holds true and Story comes back after just three rehab games, he would be looking at somewhere between 8-to-12 minor league plate appearances before facing MLB pitching again. In 41 games this year before going down with the injury, Story struggled mightily, slashing .206/.244/.303 with just three home runs.
The hope for both Story and the Red Sox is that the veteran infielder will return to his post at shortstop and regain the strong form he displayed in the second half of 2025, where he rebounded from a slow start to post a 25-homer, 31-stolen base season as one of the team’s most valuable players. The fear, however, is that these days are behind him.
Boston has seen offensive production from right-handed hitting Andruw Monasterio at the shortstop position, but his defense has left much to be desired. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is also set to begin a rehab stint later this week, though he will be a few days behind Story’s schedule. The team does still hold the nuclear option of calling up phenom prospect Franklin Arias if all else fails, but it seems likely that they will try to let Story settle back in before making such a drastic decision.
The issue with rushing Story back from rehab is that he may not be given a long leash to find his timing at the big-league level with the Red Sox competing for a Wild Card spot. In need of an offensive spark earlier in the season, the club activated Romy Gonzalez after just six rehab games where he went 2-for-18. This move backfired, and Gonzalez had to be sent back down after a brutal 12-for-65 stretch.
With just six weeks left in the season, it’s understandable for Story to want to get back in the mix as soon as possible. But if things don’t go well upon his return, he and the team could end up regretting such a quick minor league rehab.
