The Godolphin homebred has missed two works since developing a hoof abscess. Trainer Bill Mott told DRF that he hopes Sovereignty can resume training next week in order to train up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
There is a chance Mott could reroute 2025 G1 Pennsylvania Derby winner Baeza or 2026 Birdstone Stakes winner Stars and Stripes to the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Baeza, previously announced as targeting the G1 Goodwood at Santa Anita on Sept. 26, will work on Saturday at Saratoga, according to DRF.

After winning the G1 Travers last year, Sovereignty trained up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar, but was scratched as the 6-5 morning line favorite due to a fever. There were 10 weeks between the 2025 Travers and Breeders’ Cup Classic; the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Classic will take place 12 weeks after the Whitney.
Sovereignty has made three starts in 2026. He began his season with back-to-back defeats in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap and the G1 Stephen Foster, then captured the G1 Whitney by 4 ¾ lengths on Aug. 8. He posted two four-furlong works since on Aug. 21 and Aug. 28.
