What businesses opened in July?
Ginger & Raven
A new novelty shop opened at 1731 L St. in midtown. The store sells specialty candles, science-themed knick-knacks and Italian charm bracelets, the owner Korin Friesen told The Bee.
The store first started as a pop-up at the midtown farmer’s market in 2023. Its merchandise is from local vendors across Sacramento, Friesen said. Ginger & Raven is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, noon to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, according to the business’s social media. The business is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Spitz Mediterranean Street Food
Roseville got a new Mediterranean restaurant on 2030 Douglas Blvd. in the city’s Rocky Ridge Town Center. Spitz, which specializes in street food, serves wraps, loaded fries, gyros, protein bowls and salads. Spitz was founded in Los Angeles in 2006. The opening of the Roseville expansion is part of the chain’s Sacramento area expansion, according to founder Bryce Rademan.
Spitz is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Pacific Thrift Store
In Citrus Heights, a thrift store that donates its sales directly to widows, refugees and immigrants opened. Pacific Thrift Store is on 7424 Greenback Lane and is owned by the Pacific Coast Slavic Baptist Association. The religious organization said the money collected from sales goes to mission initiatives and other programs locally and worldwide.
This store will be the second Pacific Thrift in the Sacramento area. The first location began in North Highlands at 6101 Watt Ave. in 2013.
Pacific Thrift Store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays to Saturdays.
Hangover Noodles
Hangover Noodles is a Southeastern Asian fusion ghost kitchen in East Sacramento, serving customers at The Line on 6415 Elvas Ave. The restaurant also delivers on DoorDash and Uber Eats.
The restaurant, which says the cure for any hangover is in its noodles and soups, sells a full menu of Southeastern Asian comfort food. These dishes include curry, drunken noodles, pho and stir-fry.
Co-owned by Lisa Silimanothay, she runs the business with her mother, who immigrated to Sacramento from Laos.
Hangover Noodles is open to customers from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Toasted Rooster Cafe
A cafe owned by a wife duo opened a second location in Orangevale. Carrie and Acia Wolfe launched Toasted Rooster Cafe on 8841 Greenback Lane in July. The restaurant sells classic American breakfast cuisine, including chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, eggs Benedict and omelettes.
The Wolfes started Toasted Rooster Cafe in Arden Arcade in 2022. The married couple was inspired to start the restaurant after Annie’s Breakfasts & Steaks shut down in 2020. The two were inspired to bring back a mom-and-pop breakfast restaurant to their neighborhood.
Toasted Rooster Cafe is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays to Fridays and from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays.
West Coast Taco Bar
West Coast Taco Bar has opened a delivery-only location in Newton Booth. Located at 1829 22nd St., the restaurant serves California-style Mexican food, like California burritos. The restaurant first started as a food truck at SacYard Community Tap House in East Sacramento.
Cynthia Garcia, the co-owner of West Coast Taco Bar, said that because most of the foot traffic to their original Elk Grove location is takeout, it was the easiest way to introduce a second location.
The Newton Booth location is still operating on its soft opening hours. Delivery is open from Tuesdays to Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Fridays from 5 p.m. to midnight.

The Crave Spot
The Crave Spot is a new Fijian and international cafe in South Natomas. Owned by a Fijian immigrant family, the restaurant is at 645 Northgate Blvd. inside the Northgate Plaza Shopping Center.
The cafe serves a variety of pastries and desserts, including pizza, meat pies, banana bread, cakes and sandwiches. Crave Spot also serves homemade drinks from coffee, lemonades and hand-crafted sodas.
Serving pastries and drinks from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Crave Spot is open daily.
Which businesses closed in July?
Koja Kitchen
Along K Street, the Korean-Japanese fusion restaurant Koja Kitchen, closed in early July. The restaurant operated at 732 K St. since 2019. The restaurant was best known for its sandwiches filled with Korean BBQ meat in between garlic-fried-rice buns.
In a social media post, Koja Kitchen thanked its customers for “years of support, incredible memories, and love” at the downtown location. Owners of Koja Kitchen did not respond to an inquiry from The Bee and did not elaborate on what prompted the closure.
Casa East Sac
An East Sacramento American restaurant shut its doors due to a dip in customer foot traffic and economic struggles. Casa East Sac on 5401 H St. closed immediately in July. Co-owner Steve Gibanov told The Bee the restaurant couldn’t “weather the storm” of its sales goals.
“We tried to do our best to hold on, having full-service restaurant staffed with no customers, just burning labor. It completely ate us alive,” Gibanov said.
In its farewell message, Casa East Sac expressed gratitude to its customers, staff, vendors and all of East Sacramento.
Cakes by Jeff
The acclaimed Cakes by Jeff did not renew its lease for its Downtown Commons location this month. In a social media announcement, owner Jeff Taylor said the business would be exploring other ventures.
The storefront opened in DoCo in 2023. Its cheesecakes have been awarded locally and nationally. Taylor’s cheesecakes won the Food Network competition “Sugar Showdown” and A&E’s “Best in Chow.” Taylor also won third place in the California State Fair Food Festival in 2022.
Cakes by Jeff’s last day was on July 31.
Range Midtown
After only three-and-half months of business, Range Midtown closed at 1813 Capitol Ave. The owner of American comfort food restaurant said the closure was because the location did not get enough customers.
Ahsan Ali, one of the restaurant’s owners, said the midtown location experienced a disconnect between its food and the customer base in Sacramento.
Range’s other location in Roseville will remain open, Ali said.
The Breakfast Club at Midtown will be replacing Range, according to signage posted in front of the restaurant.
Pressed
The organic juice chain, Pressed Juicery, closed its location in DoCo. The closure of Pressed Juicery marked the third business to shut down in the downtown shopping center this summer.
While Pressed Juicery is no longer at 414 K St., its juice is available in grocery stores and at its Roseville location.
