A progressive challenger in Congressional District 22 outraised his incumbent opponent in the latest reporting period.

Randy Villegas, D-Visalia, reported $897,368 from May 14 to June 30. Data comes from the Federal Election Commission, measured for a six-week period as opposed to the traditional quarterly reports.
David Valadao, R-Hanford — running for his seventh term — reported $694,188 for the period. He maintains larger hauls for the entire election cycle and has more cash on hand.
Experts expect Valadao vs. Villegas to be one of the closest races in the nation.
Both congressional Republican and Democratic Party fundraising wings are focusing on the race, which includes Bakersfield, Visalia, and the northwest section of the city of Fresno. The Democrats are now on Villegas’ side after backing his opponent, Jasmeet Bains, D-Delano, in the primary.
“I’m proud that our campaign is powered by the people of this community — not corporate PACs or special interests,” Villegas said in a statement. His campaign said 96% of his contributors gave $100 or less.

Villegas has accepted thousands from union and environmental groups.
Republicans focused on Valadao’s overall totals in a statement, calling Villegas “a Socialist stooge.”
“Villegas should keep begging Gavin Newsom and his socialist allies to bail him out, because Central Valley voters clearly are not buying his radical agenda of higher costs, more dysfunction and the same failed Sacramento politics,” said National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Christian Martinez.

Both parties are also looking at Congressional District 13. First-term Rep. Adam Gray, D-Merced, is behind his challenger Kevin Lincoln, R-Stockton, but has more than double cash on hand.
