Steelers Linked to Chris Godwin Jr. With Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson on IR

Injuries have thinned the Pittsburgh Steelers’ receiver room, and CBS Sports thinks the answer sits in Tampa Bay. Its list of 10 trade deadline moves sends Chris Godwin Jr. to the Steelers, who head toward the Nov. 10 deadline with Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson on injured reserve.

Wilson went on IR on Oct. 17 with a finger injury that will cost him at least four games, per Pro Football Talk. He had 14 catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns, and Pittman had seven catches for 89 yards in three games before landing on IR. With Ben Skowronek also out with a calf injury, Aaron Rodgers leaned on rookie Germie Bernard, who is earning the veteran’s trust, in the 26-19 overtime win in Tampa. Bernard played 74 snaps with a 67.7 grade, and practice squad call-up Brandon Smith played 41 snaps with a 50.9 grade, according to PFF.

Why Chris Godwin Jr. fits in Pittsburgh

Godwin has 23 catches for 216 yards on 30 targets for a Buccaneers team that sits 30th in passing yards per game, and Baker Mayfield sat out Sunday’s game. CBS acknowledges his three-year contract is expensive and that he has struggled to stay on the field, but he’s healthy now, and Tampa Bay is 1-5.

Rodgers needs the help. He has 1,487 yards and 12 touchdown passes, and Pittsburgh has one rushing touchdown, the fewest in the NFL. DK Metcalf has 30 catches for 318 yards and one touchdown on a team-high 52 targets, and he graded 64.0 on 56 routes against the Bucs, according to PFF. A healthy Godwin would give Rodgers a proven option working underneath Metcalf.

Mike McCarthy has sounded like a coach comfortable with what he has. “I believe in the 68 guys that we have in the building and when opportunities are presented, that’s who I prefer to go with,” he said

hinted at roster expectations

That stance gets tested every week Wilson and Pittman sit, and the questions at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the South Side won’t stop until the receiver room is whole again. Godwin would join a list of trade targets the Steelers could pursue that already includes Brian Thomas Jr., and Pittsburgh has the AFC North standing to justify a buyer’s move at 4-2.
