Steve Fryer’s five football topics to watch during Week 0

Here are some opinions and insights going into Week 0 of the 2026 season:

1. Is Santa Margarita your pick to win the CIF-SS Division 1 title this season?

My selection is St. John Bosco. Braves quarterback Koa Malau’ulu threw for 2,361 yards with 33 touchdowns and five interceptions laser season as a sophomore. That is an outstanding touchdowns-to-interceptions ratio for a sophomore playing Trinity League teams and that difficult nonleague schedule had last year and every year. And of course Bosco has top-shelf talent all over the field.

2. Is there an Orange County player you think will dominate this season?

Crean Lutheran quarterback Caden Jones is everyone’s pick to click, and for many good reasons. Laguna Beach quarterback Jack Hurst will throw for a zillion touchdowns. But that one guy who is going to be a nightmare is Tustin interior lineman Jeremiah Williams. Unblockable.

3. What’s the Week 0 game that has your attention?

Centennial vs. Servite, Thursday at Orange Coast College. Servite has that crazy speed, with state-champion sprinters in football uniforms. Those were under-utilized weapons last season. Will Servite be able to get those guys the ball in productive situations this season?

4. Which county team missed the playoffs last year but will be much improved this season?

Cypress. That was a young team that went 3-7 overall and 0-5 in the Delta League last year. Look for a better record this season, and even more improvement in 2027.

5. Pick an Orange County player who you would want on your team if you were a coach.

Jaxson Rex, San Clemente senior receiver and defensive back. That guy is a major playmaker offensively and defensively.
