“They’re just strong, powerful females” – Sophie Cunningham credits her family for her fearless personality

In recent years, there has been no player in the WNBA as outspoken and unapologetic as Sophie Cunningham. The Indiana Fever guard has emerged as one of the league’s most popular players for her fearless on- and off-court antics.

Since debuting in 2019, Cunningham has always been unapologetic on the court and it was only amplified when she joined the Fever in 2024, becoming a fan favorite after being crowned the unofficial bodyguard for Caitlin Clark.

Her confidence on and off the hardwood has made her one of the most popular players in the league today, and it didn’t just come out of the blue. It was something that had been instilled in her by the females she had been surrounded by since the beginning.

A family full of athletes and powerful women

Growing up in Missouri, Cunningham was surrounded by a family that lived and breathed sports. She spent her childhood competing with her older sister, Lindsey Cunningham. Her bond with her sister ultimately became the fuel for her competitive desire, whichever sport it may be.

“I always talk about me and my sister because we were just best friends, still are. We did everything together,” Soph

“She’s older than me, we just grew up playing every sport possible, and so it was basketball, golf, soccer, gymnastics, swimming, volleyball, track and field, softball, everything you can think of, we did it,” she added.

That constant competition with her older sister created the edge Cunningham still plays with today. At Rockbridge, Soph’s toughness and relentless competitiveness pushed her to compete in many sports, including volleyball, soccer, and even football, where she became a kicker for the boys’ high school team.

Her sister shaped her competitive drive, but she still didn’t have any local idols to look up to. Growing up in Missouri meant there weren’t many female professional athletes she could idolize, but fortunately for her, she didn’t need to look outside her family.

“When it comes to who inspired me, I do think that it was my mom, my aunt and my grandma,” she shared. “They’re just strong, powerful females who have made a huge impact on raising other strong, powerful females in the world.”

“Honestly, there’s just not a lot of people who are pros who were able to maybe give these girls here in the Midwest a platform. I had no one really look to look up to when it came to professional basketball, professional sports in the Midwest,” added Cunningham.

The lessons she soaked up in her sport-first family eventually led her to continuing her family’s legacy at college in Missoiru, where she became one of the greatest players in program history, finishing her collegiate career among the Tigers’ all-time leaders in points, rebounds and assists.

By the time the Phoenix Mercury drafted her, Sophie’s confidence was already there and it allowed her to grind her way up the rotation to become one of the most reliable shooters in the league, eventually making her way to Indiana and fully showing everyone the woman her family helped her to become.

Fearless then and now

Now, Cunningham’s personality hasn’t changed much since. If anything, it has become even more visible, whether it be defending Clark during scuffles or her other taunts, which have made her a beloved icon for some.

Off the court, however, Soph’s antics had made her a polarizing figure. Her charm and personality have created opportunities, such as a one-night stint as a UFC ring girl, which have increased her popularity. But that same fearlessness has ruffled some feathers more recently due to her comments on f transgender athletes in sports.

Despite the divide in her public image, Sophie has, in many ways, become exactly what she hoped to be: an example for young athletes, especially in the Midwest. All thanks to the powerful women who inspired her to become who she is today.
