It got a little heated on the set of “Sunday NFL Countdown” when the topic of C.J. Stroud came up.

After former Patriots great Tedy Bruschi expressed concern about the Houston Texans’ future with Stroud at quarterback, Smith jumped in to defend the QB’s production over his first few years.
And it didn’t take long for things to get a loud on ESPN‘s set between the two ex-players as they debated what’s really going on in H-Town.

“I am worried about the Houston Texans,” Bruschi began. “C.J. Stroud coming off of that playoff loss in New England and what he did this offseason in turning down a big contract offer… I don’t want my quarterback on this team to go out there and say, ‘This is a prove-it year for me.’”
“He has a defense around him and a running game that he has to realize— to go far the defense is going to lead them and I don’t want my quarterback wanting to throw for 4,500 yards.”
Smith pushed back by arguing there isn’t a QB in the league that would’ve thrived in Houston’s situation last year, which really set the three-time Super Bowl champ off.
“I think there were quarterbacks that could’ve handled that situation. This guy goes in there and looks like he hasn’t played outdoors before because he’s in the dome all the time and he’s got a mask—”

Fans react to Smith and Bruschi’s ’emotional’ argument
“Just loud and wrong. Thinking just because he won Super Bowls he can run his mouth,” a fan said of Bruschi. “CJ had no running game or O-line protection. I can’t wait for him to shut him up.”
“Alex Smith is right. This year there is no excuse because the running game and offensive line is significantly better than last year,” another replied.
“Have to side with Tedy on this one. Stroud still needs to prove we can win in the Playoffs,” a user admitted.
“Bro… CJ Stroud being named one of the best is CRAZZZZY work. He’s awful, sorry Houston fans he’s just not good and that if Texans team had a a true QB1 it’s over for the AFC,” another person commented.
“Alex Smith claiming CJ Stroud has ‘nothing around him.’ Nico Collins is one of the best WRs in the league.. not sure if I missed something here?” another user asked. “Moronic take.”
Regardless of who’s side you fall on, 2026 will be a big season for the Houston Texans and where they fit into the AFC’s puzzle — and the play of C.J. Stroud will have a lot to do with that.
