CBS broadcaster and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is being advised to hire a personal driver after his arrest in Milwaukee.

Romo, 46, was arrested last Thursday on suspicion of operating while under the influence. He was booked with first-offense OWI, which usually comes with a fine ranging from $150 to $300. The body camera footage from his arrest was released earlier this week. You can hear him tell the police that he was leaving a golf course to go visit his grandparents.
“Later in the footage, the officer returns to Romo’s car and asks him to step out of his Jeep to perform field sobriety tests, but Romo repeatedly asks whether he can call his lawyer before finally exiting the vehicle,” TMZ reported. ”The officer tells him no and orders him to get out. Romo eventually complies, and the officer tells him he is being detained pending an OWI investigation.”
The California Post later reported that cops found an open bottle of booze in Romo’s vehicle.
“The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office released to the California Post copies of three citations its officers hit Romo with in the immediate aftermath of his July 23 arrest in Wisconsin, and one of them claimed the CBS NFL analyst had an ‘open bottle of an alcoholic beverage’ located on the passenger side of his black Jeep,” the report states. “A deputy discovered the item when they were taking inventory of Romo’s car as it was being towed, according to the citation. The document stated Romo is facing a $267 fine for the alleged ‘possess open intoxicants in MV-driver’ offense.”
While Romo has stayed silent since his arrest, he continues to dominate the headlines. Earlier this week, NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk urged Romo to hire a personal driver. He also brought up San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and his scary car accident in Palo Alto, California.

“Although the recent automobile incidents involving 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and CBS broadcaster Tony Romo involved different circumstances and outcomes, the situations underscore an inescapable reality when it comes to the transportation options available to people of considerable means,” Florio wrote. “Hire a driver. Private car services are available throughout the country. And anyone who has a 24/7 job and/or the resources to not think twice about the expense would be wise to rely on someone else to get them from Point A to Point Anywhere.”
Is CBS going to fire Romo?
There’s currently zero indication that Romo will be fired before Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. He’s still expected to be in the booth alongside Jim Nantz.
Romo, however, is reportedly going to take a “step back” from the spotlight until the season opener.
“Thankfully, Tony didn’t hurt himself or anyone else, and most importantly, no lives were lost. He knows he made a terrible decision and is well aware of it and he knows he disappointed not only himself, but those he works with and family,” an inside source told Daily Mail. “He contacted his bosses almost immediately to let them know what had happened because he understood the story would spread quickly once it became public. He’s already canceled his appearance at the golf tournament he was scheduled to attend and play in, and over the next few weeks he’s looking to keep a low profile while focusing on getting himself ready for the upcoming season.”
