The Minnesota Twins will be holding their breath.
Superstar center fielder Byron Buxton exited Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees after re-aggravating a prior hip injury. Buxton has been dealing with a right hip impingement.

Byron Buxton was removed from the game after reaching on a single and getting thrown out trying to second base in the top of the first inning.

Buxton was caught trying to steal second base to end the top of the first inning, his first caught stealing since May of 2024. He was then removed from the game when the Twins took the field for the first time today. Kyler Fedko replaced Buxton in center field to start the bottom of the first.
Buxton, 32, is having a monstrous season for the Twins this season. In 75 games, the righty bat is slashing .271/.328/.575 with a .903 OPS, 25 home runs and 45 RBI. As a result, he was selected to the third All-Star Game of his career on Saturday.
The Twins will now hope that Buxton doesn’t have to go on the injured list and/or miss significant time. But it might be the safest play to place him on the IL to allow the hip injury to heal. It is certainly a concerning sign that Buxton re-aggravated his hip issue.

He will likely head for further testing on the hip.
Minnesota needs Buxton healthy if they’re going to make a run at an AL Wild Card spot this season. They entered the day 2.5 games back of the third and final Wild Card spot in the AL.
The Twins want to avoid being sellers at the August 3 MLB trade deadline. Luckily, GM Jeremy Zoll already came out recently and said the team will not be trading Buxton (full no-trade clause) this summer.
While Buxton will be kept around, that doesn’t mean the Twins won’t be trading Joe Ryan and Ryan Jeffers if they’re out of contention a month from now. If Buxton has to miss time, the Twins could wind up being sellers.
