Growing up in Indiana, America’s most basketball-obsessed state, Jeff Teague was always surrounded by the sport’s elite talent.

In middle school, Jeff was determined to play for Pike High School, one of Indiana’s most traditional and elite basketball powerhouses. The school was and still is, known for producing natural, homegrown talent through its physically imposing rosters.
Specifically, in 2003, just before he entered high school, Teague witnessed the greatest Pike team of all time, which was absolutely loaded. The defending state runner-ups featured a squad full of NBA talent, including Courtney Lee and Robert Vaden, alongside high-level Division 1 talent like Justin Cage and Parnell Smith, going a perfect 29-0 that season.
Despite having massive talent, one would expect Pike to be the best team in the nation.
In the national rankings, however, they were the second-best team, only trailing none other than LeBron James‘ 25-1 St. Vincent-St. Mary’s high school squad, a private school that played a national schedule, featured a core group of LBJ’s childhood friends: Dru Joyce III, Sian Cotton and Willie McGee.
Yet, the two teams never matched up once during the legendary season.
Jeff says Pike would have dominated LBJ’s squad
In one of his recent “Club 520” morning show episodes, Teague disclosed one of St.Vincent-St. Mary’s players, Romeo Travis, for his take that Pike was “scared to play” SVSM and declined the matchup multiple times.
“He should say they want the door and they was gon’ charge us $10,000 to play ’em,”said Teague. “They don’t say that part. We woulda dogged them. We woulda beat Bron. They only had Bron.Man, Romeo woulda gotten murdered. We was 6’6″ across the board. Romeo went to Akron. J-Cage went to Xavier. There was levels. We had Courtney Lee and Robert Vaden, both went to the league.”
“Bron was gon’ be Bron. But we just started, our team was so tall,” added Teague. “In high school, don’t get it twisted, LeBron was way better than Rob and them. Yeah, it’s not close. LeBron was the best. But Rob woulda still had 20 points. Courtney Lee woulda still had a [20-point game]. We woulda beat ’em, they ain’t see nothing like this, and we ain’t see nothin’ like Bron.”

The game would have been generational
When all gets taken into account, it’s undeniable this would have been an entertaining matchup and possibly the biggest one of that season.
Pike absolutely steamrolled through Indiana’s toughest class of squads before winning a state title and going undefeated the entire season. Not only did they have a dominant starting five, but they had a solid bench and ran deep rotations with their relentless, high-pressure defensive schemes, beating their opponents to the ground.
On the other hand, St. Vincent-St. Mary’s, as we all know, featured James, the greatest prospect of all time. LBJ was a completely unstoppable force as a 6’8″ man-child, who routinely dismantled many legendary rosters, like Oak Hill, Mater Dei, and Westchester. Alongside his historical dominance, the rest of the squad wasn’t afraid of playing under extreme media pressure and on the national stage.
Considering James’ generational basketball IQ, even at that age, he would likely pick Pike’s defense apart, pushing their traps to the absolute brink with his court vision and inhumane physical attributes.
The hypothetical game could go either way, but for Teague to strictly say Pike would absolutely dominate is up for debate, because both teams are generational in their own right and would cause problems on both sides.
