The Tampa Bay Buccaneers addressed several needs during the 2026 NFL Draft, but one selection that hasn’t received as much attention could eventually become one of the team’s best. Second-round linebacker Josiah Trotter may not have generated the same buzz as the first-round selection of Rueben Bain Jr. Still, he has many of the qualities needed to outperform his draft position.

The Buccaneers announced in May that they had signed Trotter, meaning all seven members of the team’s 2026 draft class were officially under contract. While signing a rookie contract is expected, it also marked the beginning of what could become a very promising NFL career.
Why Trotter Could Become a Draft Steal
One reason for optimism is Trotter’s production in college. During his final season at Missouri, he led the Tigers with 84 tackles, 13 of which were for a loss while achieving first-team All-SEC honors. He is also highly regarded for being solid against the run and an effective blitzer. This was all achieved while competing in a major conference and playing well-built offenses on Saturdays. He was one of the main reasons for the Missouri Tigers’ success last season.
Trotter also enters one of the league’s best situations for a young linebacker. Todd Bowles has earned a reputation for developing defensive talent, especially with players that can pressure the quarterback like Trotter.

Another reason to believe Trotter could exceed expectations is his football pedigree. As the son of former NFL standout Jeremiah Trotter, he has grown up around the game and understands the work ethic required to succeed at the next level. Good hereditary genes alone don’t guarantee NFL success, but there have been many examples in the NFL where sons of former greats have had success.
Opportunity Could Be the Difference
Trotter enters training camp with an opportunity to compete for meaningful playing time, and if he earns Bowles’ trust early, his role could continue to expand as the season progresses.
General Manager Jason Licht has a knack for finding quality talent in the second round of the draft such as Antoine Winfield Jr., not just in the first round. If Josiah Trotter becomes the player Tampa Bay believes he can, the Buccaneers may eventually look back on this selection as one of the biggest steals of the 2026 NFL Draft.
