Roseville police are continuing to investigate after officers discovered what they believed was an improvised explosive device during a traffic stop on Labor Day.

The traffic stop occurred about 6:11 p.m. Monday near Atkinson and Ivy streets. The men told officers they had an explosive device, prompting officers to close a portion of the roadway while they investigated.
“In an abundance of caution, a perimeter was established and the bomb squad was called to assess and render the device safe if necessary,” Roseville Police spokesperson Shauna Brewer said Monday evening.
The roadway reopened about 8 p.m. after two men were arrested in connection with the traffic stop.

According to jail booking records, a 56-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving with a suspended license. A 33-year-old man was arrested on drug-related charges. Both men had outstanding warrants in Placer County, according to jail logs.
The suspected improvised explosive device was seized and remains part of the department’s ongoing investigation, Brewer said.

The two men are scheduled to appear Wednesday in Placer Superior Court.
