EA Sports is making one thing clear with EA FC 27: player skill-not AI assistance-is taking center stage. During Wednesday’s Gameplay Deep Dive and accompanying Gameplay Pitch Notes, the developer unveiled sweeping gameplay updates that touch nearly every area of the pitch, from defending and passing to attacking movement, crossing and set pieces.

Community feedback consistently called for less automation and greater control over key moments, and EA says FC 27 has been built around those requests. Across every game mode, the focus is on giving players greater control by reducing automation and rewarding decision-making more consistently throughout each match.
Here’s everything that changed.
Manual Defending Is the Biggest Gameplay Change
The headline gameplay change in EA FC 27 is defending. EA notes these defending changes apply specifically to Competitive gameplay, with Authentic gameplay receiving its own updates during the upcoming Career Mode Deep Dive.
Rather than allowing AI teammates to frequently win possession on their own, defenders will now focus more on maintaining their shape while players are responsible for manually switching, jockeying and timing tackles. AI defenders can still react to loose balls or attackers who dribble directly into them, but winning possession is now intended to be a much more player-driven action.
Key defending changes include:
- Reduced influence from AI-controlled defenders.
- Reduced interception reach for AI defenders.
- Increased jockey speed for manually controlled defenders.
- Increased range for manually triggered stand tackles.
- Greater emphasis on switching, positioning and tackle timing.
- Teammate Contain defenders now mark the ball carrier from slightly farther away.
The result is a defensive system that places more responsibility-and reward-in the player’s hands.
Corner Kicks and Crossing Have Been Completely Reworked
Set pieces are receiving one of their biggest overhauls in years.
After selecting where to deliver a corner, the camera now shifts toward the penalty area before the kick is taken, allowing players to move attackers, switch players, make runs, shield opponents and use the new Avoidance mechanic before the ball arrives.
The corner kick changes include:
- A new camera transition before direct deliveries.
- Control over attackers before the ball arrives.
- Manual player switching and movement.
- The ability to make runs and shield for position.
- A new Avoidance mechanic for moving through crowded areas.
- Less automatic positioning when contesting the delivery.
EA says these changes should create greater attacking variety while making crosses and corners feel more skill-based.
Attacking AI Is Smarter Than Ever
Off-the-ball movement has also received one of its biggest upgrades in years.
EA’s new Attacking Spatial Awareness system helps attackers better recognize available space, avoid defenders and make smarter, more contextual runs throughout each attack.
New attacking improvements:
- Improved Attacking Spatial Awareness.
- Brand-new Triggered Curved Runs.
- New Pass & Follow Runs.
- Better offside awareness.
- Smarter movement into open passing lanes.
- Manually triggered runs now stop after a limited distance instead of continuing indefinitely.
- Improved Creative Runs that react more naturally to defensive positioning and available space.
These updates are designed to make attacking movement feel more intentional while giving players greater control over how teammates move off the ball.

Passing and Through Balls Are Less Assisted
Passing is becoming significantly more manual in EA FC 27.
Ground and lobbed through passes now follow directional input much more closely instead of heavily steering toward open passing lanes. EA says this rewards deliberate aiming while giving defenders a better opportunity to read the play and intercept inaccurate passes.
Passing updates include:
- Ground and lobbed through passes rely much more on player input.
- Through balls no longer heavily steer toward open passing lanes.
- Dinked passes are now fully manual.
- Precision aiming plays a much bigger role.
- Defenders have more opportunities to intercept misplaced passes.
The overall goal is to increase the skill gap while preserving creative passing options.
Dribbling, PlayStyles and Attributes Receive Major Updates
EA also introduced a new dribbling mechanic while rebalancing several of the game’s most popular PlayStyles.
Off-Balance Dribbling allows the world’s best dribblers with the required Balance, Agility and Dribbling attributes to maintain possession after shoulder challenges and collisions by staying in control while stumbling through contact.
Meanwhile, EA has rebalanced numerous PlayStyles to reduce the gap between PlayStyles and core player attributes, making ratings more meaningful across the pitch.
Additional gameplay updates:
- New Off-Balance Dribbling.
- Finesse Shot now relies more on player shooting attributes.
- Technical Dribbler rebalanced.
- Intercept improved for high-rated players without the PlayStyle.
- Rapid and Quick Step toned down.
- Pinged Pass no longer improves the receiver’s first touch.
- Tiki Taka no longer boosts first-touch control.
- Jockey rebalanced.
- Precision Header adjusted.
- Low Driven shots now rely more on shooting attributes than PlayStyles.
Biggest Takeaways
The biggest theme throughout EA FC 27’s gameplay reveal is greater player control.
The biggest changes include:
- Reduced AI defending assistance.
