When we were building out the story on cool and refreshing food and drink in Sacramento, I initially had an entire section on raw fish. Ultimately, I decided to cut it for length, and because I felt there were simply too many viable options.

For example, I think the ceviches at Chicha Peruvian Kitchen are beautifully balanced. The tiraditos at Octopus Peru showcase the delicate interplay of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine. The aguachile verde at La Costa Cafe delivers a spicy, herbaceous punch to the palate. Moreover, virtually any plate of sashimi from any serviceable sushi joint will make me happy. I’m easy like that.
Then there’s poke. While I greatly enjoy the true Hawaiian poke of cubes of red tuna dressed in soy sauce, sesame and seaweed, I also am a maximalist at heart, and so I gleefully go for the choose-your-own-adventure style that has become prevalent.
You can’t chuck a rock without hitting a poke place in this town, but there’s one I frequent most: Poke Ichii. It started as a pandemic discovery, just a nearby spot in Pocket on DoorDash, but I was instantly enamored.
Rice is the default option as a base for poke, and various places offer a choice of white versus brown, plus maybe greens, wonton chips or even zucchini noodles, but Poke Ichii includes its own green tea-flavored soba noodles as a base. They’re cool, savory and super slurpable. Mixed half-and-half with salad greens makes the whole affair just feel lighter.

Poke Ichii is firmly in the maximalist camp, with 15 choices of protein, 10 sauces, 4 mix-ins and 18 toppings. It’s positively kaleidoscopic.
I’m a fan of a combo of ahi, salmon and spicy scallop, paired with kimchi, seaweed salad and sunomono. Sauces and toppings are subject to my whims of the moment.
Of course, Poke Ichii has some prefab choices if you’re paralyzed by the excess of options, and there are some sides to choose from, including Spam musubi, takoyaki and mochi ice cream for dessert.
