Memorials across the nation are planned for Friday to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
More than 3,000 people died when hijacked airliners hit the World Trade Center, collapsing both towers, and the Pentagon. A fourth airliner crashed in a Pennsylvania field after passengers tried to take back control from hijackers.
The attacks, carried out by al-Qaida at the command of Osama bin Laden, resulted in U.S.-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Here’s what to know about some of the events planned locally:
Memorial stair climbs
Several Sacramento-area fire agencies plan memorial stair climbs to honor the firefighters who climbed the World Trade Center towers in search of survivors.
Sacramento: Firefighters and first responders from across California will climb the Esquire Tower at 1215 K St. starting at 8:30 a.m., preceded by registration and opening remarks. The 22-story climb symbolically represents the 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers.
Davis: The UC Davis Police Department, UC Davis Fire Department and UC Davis Athletics will take part in an annual stair climb and walk starting at 7 a.m. at the UC Davis Health Stadium at 864 LaRue Road. Registration includes a pancake breakfast and T-shirt.

Shingle Springs: Red Hawk Resort and Casino, along with the El Dorado County Fire Protection District, will host a memorial stair climb at 9 a.m. at the casino’s first-floor parking structure. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories.
Other Sacramento-area memorials and events
Cal Expo September 11 Memorial Plaza: The plaza will host a 25th remembrance ceremony at 9 a.m. The plaza is located on the state fairgrounds at 1600 Exposition Blvd. Some of the historic artifacts on display include a steel I-beam recovered from Ground Zero and a fountain inscribed with the names of the thousands of victims. Events will include a wreath-laying ceremony and a tribute to heroes.
Placer County: Two 9/11 remembrance events will be held in Placer County, one in Roseville and one in Auburn. In Roseville, 3,000 American flags will be on display in Vernon Street Town Square from sunrise to sunset. In Auburn, a beam from the World Trade Center gifted to the Placer County Fire Department of Cal Fire will be on display at Fire Station 71 at 11645 Atwood Road in North Auburn. The event, involving county leaders, firefighters and law enforcement, begins at 8:30 a.m.
Come From Away: “Come From Away,” the musical about airline passengers diverted to a small Newfoundland town after Sept. 11, will be performed on Sept. 11 through Sept. 20 by Broadway at Music Circus at the UC Davis Health Pavilion at 1419 H St. in Sacramento.
