One man died and a firefighter was injured early Friday in a fire at an Arden Arcade apartment complex that damaged multiple units and forced some residents to evacuate.

Fire crews responded about 4:30 a.m. to the Regalia Crest Apartments at 3532 Watt Ave., according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. One resident heard a smoke alarm and went to investigate before discovering the fire, Metro Fire said.
Firefighters arrived to find a first-floor unit of the three-story apartment building engulfed in flames, with the fire extending to balconies on the second and third floors, Metro Fire Capt. Mark Nunez said.
Firefighters searched the building while attacking the flames, evacuating residents in areas directly threatened by the fire. Other residents were told to shelter in place.
Firefighters found an adult man dead while searching the first-floor apartment, Nunez said. His identity was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after his relatives were notified.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital with a minor injury, Nunez said.
The fire was contained by about 5:30 a.m., though crews remained at the scene Friday morning.
Three apartments sustained major fire damage, while additional units had varying amounts of smoke damage, Metro Fire said. A total of 27 units were affected, firefighters said.
Metro Fire investigators remained at the apartment complex Friday morning working to determine where and how the fire started.
