WNBA star Sophie Cunningham announced the launch of her new podcast yesterday but did so without West Wilson, her friend and co-host on her former podcast. But as many fans applaud the change, Cunningham wants to clear the air.

Appearing on The Colin Cowherd Podcast, Cunningham dismissed the notion that she and Wilson parted ways on bad terms over political disagreements. Earlier this summer, Cunningham spoke out against transgender athletes in women’s sports. Wilson seemingly responded by calling the issue overblown.
But Cunningham said that the decision to replace Wilson with basketball trainer Drew Hanlen boiled down to different ideas of what to focus on. She stated that she loves Wilson and had a great time with him on the show and expects that he’ll be doing great things in the future.
“I loved West. I think we had a really fun time together. I know that he’s off doing great things, too. But he was going through some stuff, then I was going through some stuff. Everything was very, you know, main media for both of us for a little bit,” Cunningham said. “So, I think a lot of people thought that we were going at it. We really weren’t. We were just rebranding. He was going to do his own thing. The Volume was going to take care of him. I wanted to go more basketball. And so, when I first saw it, I was like, ‘This is so goofy.’ And, like, we sent stuff back and forth. Me and Wes were like, ‘These people are just dumb.’ So, um, it was fun. I still love West to death, and I had a great time with him.”
“A great business opportunity”
Cunningham also said that one of the reasons she was so passionate about doing a new podcast was a desire to make a great WNBA podcast that focuses on strictly basketball. She called out media outlets for trying to make the new podcast into something that it’s not.

“It’s just dumb. It’s just dumb,” Cunningham said. “And I think, you know, before you’re kind of, before you have this platform and before you’re kind of in the spotlight, you know, maybe I would have believed some of those stories or, like, would have got caught up in the gossip. But now that I’m on this side of it, I’m like, all these news outlets are just fake. They’re all fraud. Nothing is real.
“I think, honestly, that is why I wanted to, first of all, I thought of a great business opportunity with the WNBA. Like, there is no really good WNBA podcast, really, WNBA that strictly talks about basketball and, like, all the great things that it has in the WNBA. And so I was like, why are we not talking more like this?”
There’s still no word from Wilson on his own plans for the future. The last we heard of him he was going through some personal issues of his own, losing his role on the Bravo show Summer House after an issue regarding his ex-girlfriends best friend.
Nevertheless, many of Cunningham’s fans – new and longstanding – are delighted by the change.
