Rays Reportedly Put in Waiver Claim for Former Silver Slugger, Gold Glover

The Tampa Bay Rays reportedly tried to add Luis Robert Jr. before the former All-Star outfielder was awarded to the Baltimore Orioles on waivers.

According to Jon Heyman, the Rays were among four teams that placed a claim on Robert. The San Diego Padres were also reportedly involved, but Baltimore ultimately secured the outfielder.

Robert was coming off a stint with the New York Mets before the waiver move. His combination of power, speed and defensive ability made him an intriguing option for teams looking for another outfield bat down the stretch.

The Rays’ reported interest is notable given their position in the American League East race. Tampa Bay entered Friday with an 87-59 record and a 3.5-game lead over the New York Yankees.

Robert has dealt with injuries throughout the season and missed significant time earlier in the year. He hit .221 with 11 home runs, 26 RBIs, two stolen bases and a .707 OPS across 61 games between the Mets and Orioles.

The Orioles won the waiver claim despite sitting well behind Tampa Bay in the standings. Robert then appeared in three games for Baltimore before being placed on the 10-day injured list with left hamstring discomfort.

His latest injury means Baltimore has yet to get much of an opportunity to see what Robert can provide over a sustained stretch. The Orioles will hope he can return soon and contribute during the final weeks of the season.

For the Rays, the reported claim shows the club was willing to explore another option for its outfield as it pushes toward October. Tampa Bay ultimately missed out, but the interest in Robert offered a glimpse into the team’s approach ahead of the postseason.
