Shelton managed to produce some extra-ordinary shots but couldn’t maintain a consistent level especially towards the end of each set. With the New York crowd cheering him on, Shelton managed to clinch the third set, but immediately lost his serve in the fourth.
Zverev, who is usually very good with his serve, didn’t let Shelton sniff a chance at a break and closed out the match comfortably. One of the major points of discussion during the match was NWSL star and Ben Shelton’s girlfriend Trinity Rodman’s absence.
Rodman had a regular-season match with the Washington Spirit, and they lost their match 0-3 to Boston Legacy FC. Immediately after the match was done, Rodman flew in to make it to the final moments of the Shelton-Zverev match.
Seeing her boyfriend lose made Trinity emotional, and she could be seen crying as cameras panned towards Shelton’s box. During his speech, Zverev had some sweet words to say towards the soccer star.

“Hey Trinity, I thought you have a game today, no? Well done to you as well. You’re the lucky charm, so. Not today, but usually,” Zverev joked.

Trinity’s presence during the US Open fortnight was monumental for Shelton and her energy was infectious. The couple turned heads with their chemistry and despite the heart-break, Shelton will surely get a lot of support from her soccer-playing girlfriend as only an athlete can know a fellow athlete’s pain.
