The elephant in the room for the Pittsburgh Steelers isn’t going away anytime soon, at least not unless something changes dramatically. Joey Porter Jr. and the Steelers failed to reach a deal by the franchise’s longstanding Week 1 deadline. After Porter missed Week 1, trade speculation has picked up, but the Steelers don’t seem interested in seriously entertaining the possibility. Porter holds very little leverage, and now his Week 2 status is up in the air.

Nick Farabaugh recently discussed the entire saga. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Porter, he remains optimistic that the cornerback will be on the field in some capacity when the Steelers travel to Foxborough on Sunday.
“I actually am fairly optimistic Joey will play. I am, personally, optimistic that he will play and, if he plays I think this [trade speculation] goes out the window. So, I don’t think [a trade] has anything to do with it at that point,”
Porter’s Practice Participation Could Back Up This Optimism
Recent reports on Wednesday indicated that Porter was expected to return to normal practice reps. Mike McCarthy provided limited details, but Porter’s increased participation could be a positive sign that he is trending toward playing.
It makes sense that the Steelers would ease Porter back into action if he intends to play Sunday. He missed the entire offseason workout program and training camp while essentially holding in as he sought a new contract. That deal ultimately never materialized.
If Porter becomes a full participant later in the week, it would be an encouraging sign that supports Farabaugh’s outlook. It still wouldn’t guarantee that Porter takes the field, as his intentions remain unclear. However, Porter has very few levers to pull and, consequently, little leverage in the situation.

Week 2 Will Be Key in Determining Porter’s 2026 Outlook
That doesn’t mean Porter has no options. He could sit out 10 games, play the minimum six to prevent his rookie contract from potentially tolling, and then enter free agency next offseason. That scenario doesn’t seem likely, however.
The other significant option is a trade, which cannot be ruled out. If Porter were pursuing that route, though, it seems likely that the situation would have progressed further by now and that his desire to leave Pittsburgh would be much clearer.
If Porter is a full participant this week, he will likely be on the field Sunday. If that happens, it would also be a strong indication that Porter will remain in Pittsburgh for 2026.
The most likely path from there is for the Steelers to use the franchise tag on Porter next offseason and resume contract negotiations. Nothing is guaranteed, but Porter’s status in Week 2 should provide a significant indication of what his immediate future with the Steelers looks like.
