His NBA resume includes almost every accolade an athlete can earn over the course of their career. Moreover, the 41-year-old star is the first player to reach 40,000 points, and many believe he could be the first to reach 50,000.
That kind of longevity places him alongside the biggest names in sports, including Michael Jordan, Cristiano Ronaldo, Muhammad Ali, and Tiger Woods. But former NBA journeyman-turned-podcaster Matt Barnes believes LeBron has moved well beyond the usual standard for a sports superstar.
LeBron James is in his own category
Recently, Barnes argued that, even though many athletes have dominated their sports, LeBron’s global influence has made him the greatest sports superstar ever.
“If you look at what LeBron embodied, on and off the court, he embodied everything. I think Bron is the greatest superstar we’ve ever seen in any sport,” Barnes
. “I think he puts himself in a category by himself.”
Barnes surely has a point because for generations, the common path of a star athlete has been to perform at a high level, sign endorsement deals, and focus on the next game or season.
However, LeBron has used his playing career to build a portfolio that includes his production company, major brand partnerships, and strategic investments through the Fenway Sports Group.
His mindset has eventually helped make him the first active NBA player to reach billionaire status. Forbes currently estimates his net worth at around $1.4 billion. It places him above another active sports superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has an estimated net worth of $1.2 billion.

LeBron’s off-court footprint is enormous, as he’s invested in his hometown of Akron through projects such as his I PROMISE school and multiple real estate projects. His portfolio also includes a Nike lifetime deal reportedly worth $1 billion, a restructured Liverpool FC and Fenway Sports Group stake valued at $141 million, 42% ownership in SpringHill, and many other business ventures.
But what makes LeBron James’ mindset so special is that at only 18 years old, he was already operating in a space that most athletes do not reach until much later in their careers.
LeBron knew his path since 2003
The 22-time All-Star spoke about his mindset in 2003, the year he was drafted No.1 overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. At the time, he was still learning how to handle the attention and opportunities. But he mentally prepared himself.
LeBron came into the league as a $100 million athlete after his rookie shoe agreement with Nike and other brand deals with companies like Coca-Cola. In an interview on ESPN’s The Life, a young LeBron shared his mindset and mentality.
“Business-wise, I know what I’m doing now. I’m not going to let nobody push me over,” LeBron said back then. “I just need to keep getting smarter, because I really don’t know everything now. But, you know, in a couple of years, maybe four or five years down the line, I’ll know a lot,”
More than two decades later, LeBron’s words fit perfectly. He continued to develop his interests through opportunities while consistently proving himself on the court.
