CONCORD – Less than two years after capturing its first league championship since 1962, Mt. Diablo has pulled the plug on its varsity program for the remainder of this season.

The decision was announced by administrators in a letter to the school community, which was forwarded to the Bay Area News Group on Tuesday.
The letter cited safety concerns as the reason for the decision.
Mt. Diablo was winless through four games, with losses to Balboa (38-6), Concord (76-7), Sonoma Valley (34-20) and, most recently, College Park (64-6).
The Red Devils were promoted this season to a higher division in the Diablo Athletic League after going undefeated in the league’s lowest division the past two years.
They began this season having had winning records three years in a row.
“I know this is incredibly difficult for our players and families, especially after the time, effort, and heart they have invested in the program,” the school statement said. “We are truly sorry for the impact this will have on our student-athletes.”
The letter added that the JV team will continue its season and that the school plans to have a varsity team in 2027.

“We want to reassure everyone that this decision is for this season only,” the letter said.
The cancellation of the varsity season comes one year after the school’s new field was set on fire, causing the team to open its season away from campus.
Mt. Diablo is the latest school in the Bay Area to cancel its varsity season. Kennedy-Richmond and Richmond also ended their seasons early, as did James Lick in San Jose.
Irvington in Fremont announced in the spring that it wouldn’t have a varsity team this fall after not being able to hire a coach.
Monta Vista of Cupertino is playing a hybrid varsity/JV schedule because of too many inexperienced players.
