The Football Power Index, which is a projection-based model, updates daily. It updated on Sunday morning, with a new team at No. 1 overall and a serious shakeup within the Top 25 rankings.
“The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete,” ESPN describes.

College football fans are not happy, though
College football fans are fed up.
“If your metric has LSU at No. 8 and Oregon at No. 9, adjust the formula,” Dan Wolken shared on X.
“Just a reminder that the CFB Playoff Committee uses FPI as a metric. A complete joke,” one fan added.

“What a joke!” one fan added.
“What is 2019 LSU doing at No. 25?” another fan joked of Florida.
“Okay…. Oregon has two losses to teams who both aren’t on this list. Texas A&M has three losses. LSU has two losses Florida has been blown out twice. UCLA completely unranked I know it’s a computer system, but the data taking points are terrible if this is the result,” one fan added.
“Advanced analytics: Where the data is skewed and losses don’t hurt you. Presented by the people who brought you the CFP!” one fan added.
The official new Top 25 polls, from the Coaches’ Poll and the AP Poll, will be out later on Sunday afternoon.
