He compiled a 256-229 record in the regular season but was 0-4 in the postseason, swept in the American League wild-card round by the Detroit Tigers in 2024 and the Chicago White Sox this season.

Espada, 51, previously served as the Astros’ bench coach from 2018-23. His contract was set to expire at the end of this month.

“We are thankful for Joe’s hard work, his passion for the game, and for his commitment to the Houston Astros,” team owner and chairman Jim Crane said. “He represented the Astros and the Houston community in the most positive way. We wish he and his family the best moving forward.”

Espada may already have another job lined up.

MLB.com reported on Tuesday that he was meeting with the Seattle Mariners about their managerial vacancy. The Astros reportedly granted Seattle permission to interview him.

The Mariners are seeking a replacement for Dan Wilson, who was let go after a 76-86 season. That came one year after Seattle fell one victory shy of a berth in the World Series.

The Astros also announced Wednesday that it was retaining pitching coach Josh Miller, hitting coach Victor Rodriguez and first base coach Dave Clark. Bench coach Omar Lopez has been offered an opportunity to remain with the club in a new role.
